Bmitzvah

Celebrate your child’s journey through the lens of Jewish culture and tradition

AGES 12+

At Beineinu, we believe that becoming a BMitzvah is not a one-size-fits-all experience. It is an immersive journey that draws on 3,000 years of Jewish wisdom while staying deeply relevant, meaningful, and engaging for today.

Our approach is grounded in joy, curiosity, and authenticity. The BMitzvah journey is guided by Daphna and supported by the Beineinu teaching team, forming a consistent partnership with a dedicated BMitzvah coach. We firmly believe there is no one way to do a Bmitzvah, The journey is specific to you.  We will work with you from start to finish crafting a pathway that is meaningful, relevant and fulfilling.

We work with students of all levels of ability and learning needs. We can teach participants to read Hebrew, and some choose to learn from a transliterated version of the text.

No matter your background, learning style, or prior experience, you are welcome here.  Our path is one that honors tradition, embraces individuality, and celebrates the beauty of Jewish life in all its forms.

Each student's experience is called a pathway—a personalized approach to the BMitzvah process. These pathways range from traditional to contemporary, reflecting the many ways one can connect with Judaism today. At the core of every journey is Torah, which we unpack together through storytelling, questioning, and discussion.

Throughout the process, students engage in five core areas:

  1. Unpacking the Torah Portion
We explore the weekly Torah portion in English, diving into characters, themes, challenges, and contemporary relevance. Through conversation and interpretation, students discover how ancient stories can speak to modern lives.

  2. Writing a D’var Torah
Students create a personal response to their Torah portion—a “d’var Torah”—which they share with their community. This can take the form of a speech, artistic expression (music, poetry, photography, painting), or a multimedia project.

  3. Chanting from the Torah
Students learn to chant from the Torah, including the blessings before and after. We support this learning with recordings, materials, and personalized instruction—including options for Hebrew learners of all levels, even those using transliteration.

  4. Justice Initiative
A core value of becoming a BMitzvah is stepping into responsibility for the wider world. Each student chooses a cause or issue they care about and dedicates a minimum of 13 hours to meaningful action—through volunteering, fundraising, awareness campaigns, or hands-on community service.

  5. Creating and Leading the Service
The ceremony is co-created with Daphna and our team of musicians. Together, we blend tradition and creativity, crafting a personalized service that reflects your family’s values and your child’s journey.

“The process of becoming a bar mitzvah was joyful, manageable and accessible for our son. Daphna's infectious energy, beautiful music and deep spirituality lifted the ceremony for a memorable and deeply meaningful rite of passage, for our family and all the assembled guests.”
